How to Furnish Your Holiday Home

How to Furnish Your Holiday Home

Before you start scouring the internet for items to furnish you holiday home you need to do two things:

  1. A Floor and Furniture Plan to scale

  • Measure each room including doors, windows and radiators.

  • Decide what furniture you need and where it is going to be positioned

  • Work out what size furniture is best (such as bed and sofa size’s)

2. Write a Shopping List

  • List all these items and write down key measurements you may need when shopping

  • Store the list on your phone so you will always have it to hand

Once you have this information you are almost ready to start shopping, but first set yourself a budget per item to keep you on track.

Now your ready to start shopping, here’s a few things to look out for…

Quality:

Buy the best quality you can afford – the furniture will stay fresher and last longer. Painted furniture looks great but paint can chip so be mindful where you use it. Wood, glass, metal and plastic (for chairs) are good durable options.

Second Hand:

It is always worth seeing what’s available second hand, often you will get higher quality items at better prices. A solid wood dining table will cost a lot of money new but there are many used items available that could be easily refreshed. Don’t be afraid to mix and match it will add character to your property

Cheap Furniture:

It is tempting to buy cheap and there are some great bargains around but do your research, check reviews and details of the products construction. Ideally view items in person before you buy or make sure you can return it easily if it is not suitable.

Flat Pack Furniture:

Often a lot more affordable but assembling multiple flat pack items is time consuming (and sometimes stressful!). If DIY is not your forte, then search for assembled items only or find out what degree of assembly is required first.

Sofa’s:

A lot of sofas are made to order and you could be in for a lengthy wait. Some shops have items ready to go so phone around furniture shops to see what they have available, or check delivery times online. A lot of second-hand sofa’s do appear online, always view before you buy and remember you may need to hire a van to collect it.

What should you invest in?

  • Beds and mattresses

  • Seating

  • Tables

Where can you save?

  • Storage furniture – bookshelves, sideboards, chest of drawers

  • Furniture in low traffic area’s
